About Bugungu Wildlife Reserve

Bugungu Wildlife Reserve covers an area of approximately 794 square kilometers near the borders of Murchison Falls National Park and the famous Nile River. The reserve encompasses mostly savanna and woodland habitats, providing critical ecosystems for a variety of species including elephants, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, buffalo, and numerous antelope species. It is also an important corridor for large mammals migrating between Murchison Falls and the surrounding protected areas. Established in 1963, the reserve plays a vital role in biodiversity protection and regional conservation efforts. Visitors to Bugungu can enjoy guided game drives across open plains, excellent birdwatching with over 240 species recorded, and riverine habitats that enhance wildlife viewing experiences. The reserve offers a less crowded alternative to neighboring national parks, making it appealing for those seeking tranquility and close wildlife encounters. Its strategic location near the shores of Lake Albert also allows tourists to witness aquatic species and birdlife unique to the area. Although facilities are limited, basic accommodations and campsites are available, and visits are typically organized through tour operators or the Ugandan Wildlife Authority. Bugungu Wildlife Reserve remains an essential part of Uganda's wildlife network, contributing to eco-tourism and the preservation of threatened species in East Africa.
